Christian Films are Finding a Welcome in Hollywood

Film studios may be waking up to the faith-and-values crowd. Christian films are alive and well — and making money. Case in point: since the independent movie Facing the Giants opened Sept. 29, it has grossed nearly $3,000,000. Dick Rolfe, CEO of the Dove Foundation, said that’s a healthy box office for a film that was produced by a church — Sherwood Baptist in Albany, Ga. — using a volunteer cast on a budget of less than $150,000. “It was, on its opening weekend, the number four film in America on per-screen income,” Rolfe said. “It was the 12th-largest-grossing film overall, and it was only on 400 screens. It was competing against films that were on 2,000 to 3,000 screens. Facing the Giants has done an extraordinary job of reaching out to the public.”
